Hi, I'm Julia

Hi, I’m Julia. Licensed Therapist, Counselor-Supervisor, and Grief and Loss Educator and Specialist. I provide a refuge for healing your grief and loss.

I am a Book and Training Nerd: I love to read and collect books, especially non-fictional books, cooking books and self-help books. I enjoy learning new things and anything related to counseling, psychology, history, art, music and cooking.

I am a chocoholic: I love anything with dark chocolate, especially! Concrete custards with chocolate are my favorite, along with Reese’s peanut butter cups.

I am a coffee fiend: I absolutely love a good cup of seasonal coffee, especially, pumpkin spice lattes, mochas, and cappuccinos.

I am a die-hard Jimmy Buffett fan and Parrot Head: whenever I need a “pick me up” I play Jimmy Buffett tunes, and it immediately cheers me up. Take me to the Islands, give me that Margaritaville style and fins up!

I am creative by nature: I enjoy anything related to art projects, painting on canvas and playing music with my guitar as my self-care plan!

I am a Dachshund lover and collector: I collect anything dachshund related. I have 3 dogs (1 black and tan dachshund named Hank, 1 chiweenie or chihuahua-dachshund mix named Mollie, and 1 mountain cur/Blood Boned Hound named Sandy).

I am a travel fanatic: I love traveling, especially road trips with my family (husband and son), taking cruises, listening to some reggae tunes and definitely heading somewhere to the tropical islands and watching the ocean waves.

My Approach

Grief and loss can be overwhelming and deeply personal. My approach integrates a variety of therapeutic techniques to help you navigate these challenging times:

  • Brainspotting: this powerful technique helps you access, process, and release emotional pain and trauma stored in the brain. It is particularly effective for individuals who have experienced significant losses.

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): ART is a transformative therapy that helps clients resolve traumatic memories and distressing images quickly and effectively. It can bring relief from grief-related trauma in just a few sessions.

  • Grief Recovery Method: This structured program offers actionable steps to help you move through your grief and find a path to healing. It is designed to address all types of loss, including the death of a loved one, divorce, and other life changes.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): I use CBT to help you identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. I use this method to blend mindfulness practices and self-compassion techniques to foster a supportive and nursing environment for healing.

My Philosophy

I believe that every individual’s grief journey is unique and deserves a personalized approach. My goal is to create a safe space, where you can explore your feelings, process your experiences, and find a sense of peace and resilience. Through our work together, I aim to empower you to embrace your emotions, develop coping strategies, and cultivate a renewed sense of hope.

Why "The Grief Refuge"?

The name “The Grief Refuge” was chosen with great care and intention. A refuge is a place of safety, offering shelter and protection. In the context of grief, it symbolizes a space where individuals can feel secure to express their pain, sorrow, and confusion without judgement. It’s a haven where healing begins, where you are encouraged to embrace your emotions, and where you are guided toward finding peace and hope.
