Grieving the loss of a loved one, whether a person or a pet, can be one of the most challenging experiences in life. The pain can feel overwhelming, and the journey toward healing may seem impossible. You may feel:

  • Overwhelmed by emotions: Waves of sadness, anger, confusion, or guilt that seem to come out of nowhere and leave you feeling unbalanced.

  • Isolated and lonely: Feeling like no one understands your pain, even when you're surrounded by people who care about you.

  • Stuck in your grief: Unable to move forward or find joy in life again, feeling trapped in a cycle of sorrow.

  • Physically and mentally exhausted: Struggling with sleep, concentration, or daily tasks, feeling like your energy is drained by your emotions.

Our Story: Why We Created The Grief Refuge

At The Grief Refuge, we understand the profound impact that grief can have on every aspect of your life. Founded by Julia Hollenbeck, a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor specializing in grief and loss, our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where you can find comfort and healing.

Julia's journey began with her own personal experiences of loss, which led her to dedicate her career to helping others navigate their grief. Trained in Brainspotting, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and the Grief Recovery Method, Julia combines these powerful techniques with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and self-compassion to offer a comprehensive approach to healing.

Through her work, Julia has witnessed the incredible resilience of the human spirit. She believes that with the right support, anyone can find their way through the darkness of grief and emerge stronger, more compassionate, and more connected to their true selves.

At The Grief Refuge, we believe in embracing everyone’s unique grieving process. Our goal is to support you through your pain, help you find resilience, and guide you toward a place of peace and acceptance.

Holistic Approach to Grief

We believe that each person’s grief journey is unique and deserves personalized attention. My approach integrates evidence-based techniques with empathetic listening to address various types of grief, including:

  • Bereavement: Coping with the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming. Our therapy journey focuses on processing emotions, adjusting to life changes, and finding meaning after loss.

  • Traumatic Loss: Dealing with sudden or traumatic loss requires specialized care. I offer trauma-informed therapy to help clients navigate shock, grief and post-traumatic growth.

  • Ambiguous Loss: When loss is unclear or ongoing, such as in relationships or health challenges, I provide support in finding clarity, acceptance, and resilience.

  • Secondary Loss: Grief can extend beyond the initial loss, affecting various areas of life. Our sessions address secondary losses like identity shifts, role changes, and life transitions.
