Our Story

At The Grief Refuge, we recognize that grief is a deeply personal and often isolating experience. Julia Hollenbeck, the founder, started The Grief Refuge after whose own journey through loss highlighted the profound need for a supportive community. During her healing journey, Julia discovered that sharing her story with others who were also grieving provided invaluable sense of connection and relief. This personal revelation drove her to create a space where others could find the same comfort and understanding.
Our Group Therapy Program was born out of this vision. Designed to bring together individuals navigating the complexities of grief, the program provides a compassionate and supportive environment where participants can share their experiences, learn coping strategies, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone. Through guided discussions, therapeutic activities, and mutual support, our group therapy program fosters healing and resilience.

Weekly Sessions: our group therapy sessions are held weekly, each lasting 90 minutes. The sessions include a combination of guided discussions, therapeutic activities, and sharing of personal experiences. These 8 sessions are designed to help participants process their grief and find support among others who understand their journey.

Intimate Group Size: each group consists of 4-6 participants to ensure a supportive and intimate setting. This size allows for meaningful connections to form and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to share and be heard.

Expert Facilitation: Each session is facilitated by a licensed therapist specializing in grief and loss. The facilitator guides the discussions, ensures a respectful and safe environment and introduces therapeutic activities to aid in healing.

Holistic Approach: The program incorporates various therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, self-compassion practices, and peer support. This holistic approach addresses the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of grief.

Duration: The program runs for 8-weeks, with each session building upon the last to create a comprehensive healing journey. This structured timeframe helps participants gradually process their grief and develop lasting coping strategies.

Flexible Participation: While sharing is encouraged, there is no pressure to disclose more than you are comfortable with. Listening and being present can also be incredibly healing.
